The Meseta

The defining geographic feature of Spain's interior—a vast high-elevation plateau spanning ~210,000 km² (43% of mainland). Madrid, at 650m/2,130ft, is Europe's second-highest capital after Andorra la Vella.

Average elevation: 660m/2,165ft. Spans Castilla y León, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, parts of Extremadura, Navarra, and Aragón.

  • Hillsides avoid frost pockets (cold air sinks to valleys)
  • Higher elevation = relief from heat in warm climates
  • Better drainage ("wet feet" avoided)
  • Increased UV radiation = thicker skins, more polyphenols
  • Result: deeper color, firmer tannins, elevated acidity

Slope & Aspect

  • Mid-slope: Ideal—balanced soil depth, good drainage, direct sunlight
  • East/SE-facing: Morning sun; reduces disease (Priorat, Rioja Alavesa)
  • South-facing: Extra sunlight for cool/windy areas (Bierzo, Ribera del Duero)
  • North-facing: Cooler; preserves acidity for whites (Godello, Treixadura)

Vineyards flanking rivers are typically 1-2°C/2-4°F warmer than those at same latitude farther from water—often enough to protect against frost. Rivers also reflect sunlight and radiate heat during growing season.

Green Spain (Maritime)

  • Northern Atlantic coast: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, País Vasco
  • Lowest average temperatures in Spain
  • Limited seasonal variation due to maritime influence
  • Abundant rainfall year-round (especially winter); snow rare except mountains
  • Cordillera Cantábrica separates from Northern Meseta
  • Favors cool-climate varieties with fresh acidity, vibrant fruit

Meseta (Continental)

  • Wide temperature swings: below 0°C winter, above 35°C summer
  • Irregular rainfall (300-600mm), concentrated spring/autumn
  • Favors early-ripening varieties like Tempranillo (mature before autumn frost)

Mediterranean Zone

  • Southern/eastern coasts from Andalucía to Cataluña
  • Milder than interior; inland can exceed 40°C
  • Lowest mainland rainfall; peaks in late autumn/winter
  • Cataluña wettest part; central/southern becoming increasingly arid

Canary Islands (Subtropical)

  • Mild, stable conditions year-round
  • Eastern islands (Lanzarote, Fuerteventura) very dry: 100-200mm/year
  • Western islands (La Palma, Tenerife) more rain: 300-800mm
  • Vineyards in volcanic craters/hollows to shield from sun/wind

Spanish Winds

Winds shape vineyard conditions—reducing humidity, cooling vines, but potentially causing damage.

Cierzo

Cold, dry, strong NW wind through Ebro Valley. Affects La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón. Most common autumn/winter.

Tramontana

Cold, dry N/NW wind from Pyrenees. Affects Empordà (Cataluña) and Balearic Islands. Autumn to spring.

Garbí

Warm, humid SW coastal wind (summer). Affects Cataluña, Valencia, Balearics. Often preceded by storms.

Levante

Warm, humid wind from Mediterranean blowing westward. Affects Valencia, Murcia, SW Andalucía. Causes coastal rain but dries inland. Spring/summer.

Solano

Hot, dry SE wind across Meseta. Affects Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Extremadura. Linked to heatwaves. Spring to early summer.

Leveche

Hot, dry Saharan wind affecting SE Spain. Often carries dust. Spring/summer.

Ábrego

Mild, humid SW Atlantic wind. Brings rain/storms autumn/spring. Affects western Andalucía, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha.

Poniente

Cool, humid westerly year-round. In SW Andalucía, counters dry Levante and brings Atlantic moisture inland.
