Regional Identity
Known as Le Jardin de la France (The Garden of France), a name dating to the 16th century when Italian gardeners tended royal vegetable gardens. The central portion from Angers to Orléans was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
The Loire exhibits structure, precision and grace. Hundreds of castles and châteaux, plus gardens and vineyards, flank the river as it flows from Mont Gerbier de Jonc to the coast.

Viticultural History
Location & Climate
The Loire River
Stretches more than 620 mi/1,000 km from its headwaters at Mont Gerbier de Jonc in the Massif Central's Cévennes Mountains to its delta on the Atlantic Coast at the Bay of Biscay.
The wine region takes its name from the river, as most vineyards flank the expansive waterway or its tributaries. Geographically, Loire is north of Bordeaux, south of Normandy, east of the Atlantic Ocean, and west/southwest of Bourgogne.

The river and its tributaries warm the vineyards and create favorable mesoclimates suitable for ripening grapes. Key tributaries include the Sèvre Nantaise, Maine, Layon, Aubance, Vienne, Cher, Indre, Loir, Allier, and Arnon.

Tuffeau
Turonian chalk formed 89-93 million years ago. Soft and malleable when unexposed; hardens after air contact. Used for buildings, monuments, and wine caves (troglodyte dwellings). Found extensively in Saumur and Touraine. Note: chalk = limestone technically.
Anjou's Geological Divide
Two geological worlds meet in Anjou: the Massif Armoricain and the Paris Basin.
- "Black Anjou" (West) — Dark schists and sandstone
- "White Anjou" (East) — White chalk, tuffeau
This difference is reflected in the color of stone buildings in each area.
Touraine Soil Types

Melon de Bourgogne
Most important in Pays Nantais (75% of plantings). Until recently, was the most planted white variety in the entire Loire. Known locally as Muscadet.
Chenin Blanc
Principal grape for dry, sweet, and sparkling wines in Middle Loire. High acidity wound around expressive aromatics. Principal for dessert wines; Malvoisie (Pinot Gris) and Romorantin also used.
Sauvignon Blanc
Primary white grape of Centre-Loire and parts of Touraine. Replaced Chasselas after phylloxera because Chasselas was difficult to graft.
Romorantin
Grown exclusively in Cour-Cheverny. Legend says King François I ordered its planting in the village of Romorantin. Wines taste of citrus, flowers, and peach.

Cabernet Franc
Principal red grape of Anjou-Saumur. First red grape planted in Loire Valley, introduced after Eleanor of Aquitaine wed Henry Plantagenet in the 12th century. Used for red, rosé, and sparkling wines.
Grolleau Noir
Backbone of off-dry Rosé d'Anjou blends. Also incorporated into dry Rosé de Loire and sparkling wines.
Gamay
Primary red grape in Upper Loire. About 5% of Pays Nantais plantings; primary in Coteaux d'Ancenis. Some undergoes semi-carbonic maceration.
Pinot Noir
Primary red grape in Centre-Loire (supported by Gamay in some appellations).

Viticulture
Climate Challenges
Loire lies close to the historical northern limit for viable viticulture. Grapes often hang late into the growing season. Since the 1980s, growers have adopted canopy management techniques (short pruning, de-budding, green harvesting) to optimize ripeness.
Many wineries practice sustainable, organic, or biodynamic viticulture despite significant humidity and rain during the growing season. The natural wine movement has found fertile ground in the Loire.
Harvest Timing (Since Early 2000s)
- ~September 15th — Harvest generally begins
- First harvested: Melon de Bourgogne + sparkling grapes
- Last harvested: Cabernet Franc + late-harvest Chenin Blanc
- Tris: Successive passes for botrytis-affected grapes (into November)
Training Methods
Guyot and Cordon are the most common training systems.
Hand harvesting is required in certain appellations (e.g., Crémant de Loire) and is necessary for late-harvest wines to select botrytis-affected grapes.
Winemaking
- Focus on preserving natural acidity and freshness
- Largely reductive techniques
- Quick harvest followed by fermentation in thermoregulated tanks (400-600 liters)
- Most Loire white wines do not go through malolactic conversion
- Many are aged on lees and bottled in spring
- Chaptalization permitted by AOC laws in certain years under certain conditions
- Chenin Blanc is the principal grape; Malvoisie (Pinot Gris) and Romorantin in specific AOCs
- Grapes must be overripe or infected with botrytis
- Very little new oak used; slight oxidation from old oak adds complexity
- Simple sweet wines bottled quickly after fermentation
- Great ones aged 8 months to several years in cellar before bottling
- Made via direct press or saignée
- Off-dry rosé from Anjou-Saumur: fermentation stopped by chilling to retain sweetness
- Rosé de Loire must be vinified dry
- Grapes destemmed and generally macerated for 1-4 weeks

Pays Nantais (Lower Loire)
Regional Overview
Westernmost Loire sub-region, located 6-60 mi/10-96 km from the Atlantic coast. Part of the Massif Armoricain. Vineyards are generally flat, slightly south-facing. Bisected by the Sèvre and Maine rivers.
- Climate: Maritime — mild damp winters, cool damp springs, warm sunny summers
- First to bud break and first to harvest in the Loire
- Soils: Ancient volcanic, igneous, metamorphic rocks (gneiss, mica schist); acidic with little limestone

Sur Lie Aging
Sur lie regulations for Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire, and Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu:
- Wines must be bottled between March and December of the year following harvest
- That's a spread of nine months during which sur lie impact varies
- Early bottling = barely there autolytic characteristics
- Late bottling = more overt autolytic characteristics
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine — 9 Crus Communaux (DGCs)
Identified terroirs of consistent quality. As of 2021:

Pays Nantais Appellations
Mostly flat, closely overlaps Gros Plant du Pays Nantais. Only responsible for 20% of all Muscadet; cannot produce wines sur lie as of 2020. Up to 10% Chardonnay authorized as of 2021.
Responsible for 75% of all Muscadet. Named for two Loire tributaries. About 90% of production is aged sur lie. Has 9 Crus Communaux (DGCs).
Smallest Muscadet AOC, furthest from the sea. Vines on hillsides (vs. flat terrain). Northeast of Nantes, overlaps Coteaux d'Ancenis. Champtoceaux became a DGC in 2021.
Southwest of Nantes along Lake Grand-Lieu. Flat terrain. Sea breezes chase away storm clouds; wines have a touch of salinity.
"Gros Plant" = big plant (vigorous vine). High-yielding. Best parcels along Sèvre and Maine rivers on sandy/gravel/granite soils. May label sur lie.
Gamay represents 65% of plantings. Whites made in semi-sweet style from Pinot Gris (labeled Coteaux d'Ancenis Malvoisie). Production evenly divided between red, white, and rosé.
Always coupled with one of 5 DGCs: Brem, Chantonnay, Mareuil, Pissotte, Vix. Nearly 80% planted to red grapes. Reds from Brem and Pissotte based on Pinot Noir.
Anjou & Saumur (Middle Loire)
Regional Overview
Moving west to east along the river, includes:
- Anjou — area around Angers, includes Layon Valley (sweet wines)
- Saumur — area around the city of Saumur
Climate: Both maritime and continental influences; Atlantic winds decline with distance from ocean.

- 20% Red — Cabernet Franc is primary
- 19% Sparkling — Saumur is Loire's largest sparkling producer

Minimum 34 g/l RS. Vineyards on schist, sands, and gravel soils flanking both sides of the Layon River. South/southwest-facing slopes allow overripening with less rot threat.
6 Communal DGCs: Beaulieu-sur-Layon, Faye-d'Anjou, Rablay-sur-Layon, Rochefort-sur-Loire, Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay
Loire's ONLY Grand Cru. Min 85 g/l RS. "Quarts" (quarter) references Middle Ages when farmers gave one-quarter of harvest to local lords. Soils are complex mix of schists and sandstone. Autumn mists encourage noble rot.
Min 51 g/l RS. On right bank of Layon River. Name from "bonnes eaux" (good waters). More refreshing acidity than Quarts de Chaume. Botrytis occurs but not required.
Savennières — Dry to Sweet Chenin Blanc
Vineyards on five steep, south-facing hills perpendicular to Loire's right bank. Soils of slate, schist, volcanic rock, and aeolian sands. Wines have aromas of peaches, dried fruits, honey, beeswax.
Planted by Cistercian monks in 1130. Owned by the Joly family. Farmed biodynamically with low yields. Hand harvested with minimum two passes.
Saumur Appellations
Most important red appellation in Anjou-Saumur. Small zone of 8 villages near Saumur town. "Champigny" believed derived from Latin campus igni meaning "field of fire" (warm mesoclimate). Tuffeau soils give elegance, soft tannins, freshness.
Covers all of Middle Loire (Anjou-Saumur and Touraine). Large crémant houses account for 80% of production.
Touraine (Middle Loire)
Regional Overview
Touraine's vineyards can be divided into three zones:
- West: Red wines from Cabernet Franc (Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil)
- Center: White wines from Chenin Blanc (Vouvray, Montlouis-sur-Loire)
- East: White wines from Sauvignon Blanc
Climate transitions from maritime to semi-continental. Spring frosts are common.
Total area: 40,000+ ac/16,000 ha under vine!
Production Breakdown
- >50% Red — Cabernet Franc primary; Pinot Noir and Gamay in certain AOCs
- 27% White — Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc; dry, semi-sweet, sweet
- 17% Sparkling — Chenin Blanc; Vouvray is key appellation

Key Chenin Blanc Appellations
On right bank of Loire, larger of the two central Touraine white appellations. Produces nearly 8 times more wine than Montlouis-sur-Loire. 60% of production is sparkling.
Key Cabernet Franc Appellations
Loire's largest red appellation by volume. Flanks the Vienne River. One of warmest growing areas in Touraine.
North of Chinon on right bank of Loire. Winemakers divide wines into "Gravel wines" (~60%, raspberry fruit, earlier drinking) and "Tuffeau wines" (more structured, spiced plums).
Eastern Touraine
Lies entirely within Cheverny boundaries. Legend: King François I ordered planting of his favorite Bourgogne grape in the village of Romorantin.
Centre-Loire
Regional Overview
Produces some of the Loire's most well-known wines. The eight appellations lie south of Orléans and west of the Grand Auxerrois sub-region of Bourgogne. The town of Pouilly is only 70 mi/112 km from Bourgogne's northern vineyards.
- Whites: Almost exclusively Sauvignon Blanc
- Reds: Almost exclusively Pinot Noir
Climate
Continental — Large seasonal temperature swings. Biggest vine threat is hail in summer; spring frosts also dangerous.
Centre-Loire Appellations
82% of production is white. Much higher elevation and hillier than Pouilly-Fumé (slopes up to 50%!).
Three soil types give different Sauvignon Blanc expressions: argiles à silex (gunflint), caillottes (quick-maturing), terres blanches (powerful, age-worthy).
On right bank of Loire, facing Sancerre. Only white wines. Sauvignon Blanc is called Blanc-Fumé here. "Fumé" means "smoked" — refers to gunflint aromas.

Upper Loire (Auvergne)
Regional Overview
Vines principally planted on rolling terrain flanking the Loire and Allier rivers which cut through the Limagne Plain. Area known as Auvergne. Most vineyards near Saint-Étienne, Clermont-Ferrand, and Roanne.
